By Jacki Wood
There’s a story told that, back in the 1830s, a few families had settled in the Nodaway County area before they were supposed to be here, while it was still Indian territory. And when the census takers came around to find people, they would hide out so as to not get caught. No one knows for sure if the story is true or not. What is known is that their names couldn’t be found on census records in other parts of the state, so they had either moved or were actually hiding.
